BirdLife Malta was established in 1962 - then named as the Malta Ornithological Society (MOS). Its partnership with BirdLife International - a global federation of 66 bird protection organisations representing 2.2 million members - has led to the apt change in name.

Part of the fascination of bird breeding stems from the constant knowledge of the fancy. No matter how long one has been breeding birds, there is always something to be learnt. Birds are individuals and only by close observaions can their requirements be fully appreciated. The Bird Breeders' Association through its world wide contacts has collected a large amount of data about the breeding habits of many species, including the development of the chicks, so that it can provide its members with an up to date source of information. Once having kept a bird as a pet, you may want to expand your area of interest and construct an aviary or bird room. The breeding of birds under controlled conditions affords a different insight into the lifestyles and habits of these wonderful creatures. The best method of assessing whether a fancier is on the right track, is by comparison. For this reason, the association organises shows and exhibitions in which all species exhibited must conform closely to prescribed standards in each variety.

Review It - The Negative Impacts of Bird Trapping on Maltese Flora
According to a paper published by one of Malta's foremost authorities on the subject, bird trapping has multiple negative impacts on our natural environment.
In his article entitled 'The Negative Impact of Bird Trapping on Maltese Flora' Steve Borg acquaints us a little better with Malta's natural heritage and expresses concern at one of the primary causes of its destruction.
The article cites an interview with a key member of one of our 'competent' authorities responsible to safeguard our historical monuments, more specifically 'The Mnajdra and Hagar Qim Archaeological Park,' which is another form of heritage being threatened by philistine practices.
