On the history of the surname Agius: There are some interesting possibilities but further research needs to be done.
1) Greek origins. " hagios", meaning holy, but there is no documentary evidence to support this.
2) Arabic/Maltese. There is a reference in a medieval document (?15thCent.source: see G. Wettinger, Melita Historica, vol.? p.?) to a "(?) hagius" meaning old man, though in Arabic it denotes old woman.
3) Purely Arabic. I found a reference to a place name, " Hagium" in early medieval Sicilian documents, meaning a place of pilgrimage and to a surname, "Agegius", referring to a pilgrim to Mecca, which suggests a Muslim origin for the name, not surprising when there were at one time in the 13th century, twice as many Muslims as Christians on the island of Malta. ( see D. Agius, Siculo Arabic, London, Kegan Paul international, 1996, pp.261-262 and 93-122)
