4.The village connection H'Attard. Attard is a common family name. It is
said that the villages name can be originating from the Attardo family who
in the 15th century resided in Zebbug and had large properties in Attard.
This family took a leading part in the discussions to bring the villages of
Hal Warda, Hal Mann, Hal Bordi and possibily Hal Kaprat should become one
parish. the debate raged for a hundred years, and it was decided in
Attard's favour in 1575 ( Read the Towns and Villages in Malta by Charles
Fiott).
Possible answer. It is said that the H' Attard area is one of the few
areas(as it is protected from winds and summer heat ) that one can grow a
decent rose and other herbal and medicinal products, products required by
the Attars
( pharmacist/physician) during the Arab or even from the Phoenician
periods. This area would have been the logical area to settle in to grow
the require materials. The Attar profession turning into a family name.

I have been able to trace "our" branch of the Attard family to Toledo,
Spain. Originally known as Ben Attar (or "Ibn Attar", and also "Attar")
Ben / Ibn is the Arabic for "Son Of".
Ben Attar / Ibn Attar or it's other variation of Attard is widespread,
throughout the Mediterranean and especially Morocco, the Maghreb
countries and Israel. In Israel there have been at least two government
ministers with the surname Ben Attar.
In the book "Judios de Toledo", 2 vol. inventario chronologico de
documentos, compiled by Pilar Leon Tello, Argentina. There are 4
Abenattar names listed as living in Toledo prior to the expulsion edict
of 1492 these where Haym Abenattar, who made his way to the Maltese
islands

and Isaac Abenattar
Aben is arabic equivalent to ibn (son of)
Amongst the famous ben Attar one can find Jakob the printer who founded
a famous printing press in Alexandria, Egypt c 1907,
The famous Kabbalist and Jewish Saint Haym Ben Attar author of Or Ha
Jaim (Luz de Vida)
and the statesman and vizier to ////mulay Ismael (Morocco) 1672-1727,
who established one of the most famous Jewish teological seminaries in
the arabic / muslim worlds.
