I have traced the name back to the original bearer of the name, which derives from the name "Bono", which is further derived from the Latin name "Bonus", from the adjective "bonus", which literally means "good". This medieval augural name was given to a child as an expression of the hope of the parents that he grow to be "good", and of "good character". The name Bono also spread because of its adoption by the Franks and Lombards, Germanic tribes who invaded Italy, as a personal name. In fact, it is possible that the surname Bonici evolved from the personal name "Bonichis", adopted by the Lombards and first recorded in Lucca in 724.
The surname Bonici is a variant or the surname Boni. There are numerous other variants. In the archives the records find a Bonici family from Malta who originated in Florence and later settled in Malta, where members were awarded the title of Baron of Culeia.
