Chev. Emmanuel Borg-Gauci Knight of St. Agatha, was born in 24.12.1911 - 12.1991 in Qormi Malta. He received the 1961 Sir Otto Beit Bronze Medal for his high reliefs and sculptured panels on the stand in St Dominic's Parish Church, Valetta. Sir Emmanuel was knighted in Valetta in 1962 as Knight of St. Agatha by the Queen's representative.
Sir Emmanuel sculpted The St Dominic's stand which four reliefs represents the four main episodes of the life of St Dominic Founder of the Order of Preachers. Each panel covers one of the four sides of a stand for the artistic statue of St Dominic by Melchior Gafa. The four caryatic angels, one on each norner of the stand with wings fully opened and forming four arched under which line the panels. The Angles are as if in flight carrying the platform bearing the Saint's statue.
Emmanuel worked as a'Restorer' at the Cathedral in Valetta for a large number of years. He sculpted in wood, bronze and 'gibs' as well as he painted oils on canvases. He spent some time at the Mellieha Bay Hotel doing pastels for tourists.
Sir Emmanuel was one of 18 children born to Giuseppa Gauci and George Borg from Hal Qormi. George was a salesman and they owned a corner "Kafe" shop in St. Sebestian Street Hal Qormi. Farmers and other men used to go drinking their coffees and karawett and have a guitar sing along gathered inside and out on the street pavement. Giuseppa used to serve behind the counter and bake. There are now 4 siblings alive, 2 in Malta, 2 in Australia, plus a good number of nephews and nieces.
Sir Emmanuel Borg-Gauci spent some time with his brother Joe in Durban South Africa but returned to Malta. He was a batchelor and lived with this brother Charlie and sisters Melita and Grace who was in the Museum order for over 50 years.
