THE BRAY COAT OF ARMS HEREBY ILLUSTRATED ABOVE IS OFFICIALLY DOCUMENTED IN RIETSTAP ARMORIAL GENERAL. THE ORIGINAL DESCIPTION OF THE ARMS [SHIELD] IS AS FOLLOWS: "DE SA. AU CHEF EMANCHE DE TROIS PIECES D'OR." WHEN TRANSLATED THE BLAZON ALSO DESCRIBES THE ORIGINAL COLOURS OF THE BRAY ARMS AS: "BLACK WITH A GOLD CHIEF SET OFF BY A 'DANCETTY' LINE." ABOVE THE SHIELD AND HELMET IS THE CREST WHICH IS DESCRIBED AS: "A GOLD LION ISSUING FORTH BETWEEN A SET OF BLACK WINGS."

Individual surnames originated for the purpose of more specific identification. The four primary sources for second names were: Occupation, location, father's name, or personal characteristics. The surname BRAY is a comparatively rare name, and appears to be locational in origin. Indicates that it can be associated with the French, meaning, "ONE WHO LIVED NEAR A MARSH OR KNOLL."

When you begin to do more extensive research on the BRAY name you may have difficulty finding it with the exact spelling, which you use today. Knowing that different spellings of the same original surname are a common occurrence, it is not surprising that dictionaries of surnames indicate probable spelling variations of the BRAY surname to be BRAYE and BRAYER. Although bearers of the old and distinguished BRAY name comprise a small fraction of the population, and very rare percentage of individuals living in Malta, there are a number who have established for it a significant place in history.

The surname BRAY is an English place name and described "The man who either lived in the so-named settlement in Berkshire, or the settlement with the same name in Devon, the settlement in Berkshire was named from old French BRAY = MARSH, and the Devon location got its name from the Cornish term BRE = HILL."

Also the surname BRAY you'll find in many towns and districts in France, Republic of Ireland, England, Normandy, and in Canada. IN FRANCE employ BRAY or some form of the name, such as: BRAY-SUR-SEINE by south of Saint Martin-Debossenay. BRAY-SUR- SOMME, BRAY-LA-CAMPAGNE, BRAY-CALVADOS, and PAYS DE BRAY by North of Seine-Maritime.

CANADA You'll find BRAY Island. In North West Territories by Baffin Island.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND "BRAY" In the county of Wicklow, [population about 26,000] you'll find It's the longest established seaside town in the country. It has the most beautiful sand beach. The Scene is dominated by BRAY HEAD, which rises steeply above the sea, affording views of mountains And sea. BRAY, due to tourism development, with elegant houses and hotels for the prosperous Victorian visitors and new residents to BRAY were known as the Brighton of Ireland.

NORMANDY "The Norman People," by King, states that the name BRAY derives from a place Called BRAY near Evreux, Normandy, and that Milo de Brai [1064] and his son of the same name [1096], a crusader, are in evidence as early members of the BRAY family in Normandy.
