Cauchis listed in Malta Militia list of 1419-1420, reaserched by Professor Godfrey Wettinger: Naxxar-- Antoni Cauki, Thumeu Cauki. Rabat-- Paulu Cauki, Antoni Cauki, Nardu Cauki, Marcu Cauchi. Civitas (Mdina) Burdinu Cauchi.
Today, Cauchi is common in Gela and Ragusa and the western coast of Sicily-Italy.
Italian geneologists claim Cauchi originated from an area north of Genoa in Italy in the tenth century. I shall give details later.
Cauchi is today found in Gharb, Ghajnsielem and Xewkija in Gozo, and in Malta is found in Floriana.
CAUCHI(noble) Very old and one of the most celebrated families of Piemonte, originated by a Guido, who had three sons, Ardoino died in 1101, Guido died during the conquest of Rerrasanta in 1079, and Pietro Bishop of Ivrea. In older times it used to be called de Canavisio, because may be it was derived from the counts del Canavese. Then the name came from the strong hold and feudal castle of their namesake de Canavese. Apart from this very important castle, the family owned a large number, amongst which were those of Courgne', Salassa,Rivara, Mazze', Rendizzone, S.Colombano, Canischio, Prascorsano, Pertusio, Pratiglione and Frassinetto. They also owned a quarter of Rivarolo, half of Rivarossa, of Oglanico, of Pont and its valleys, part of Strambino, the contea of Masino, and had superiority of Barbania, Salto, Camagna, Castiglione, Azeglio, Corio, Rocca, Levone, Busano, Oglianico, Montalengho, Cirie', Lanzo, Ozegna and Favria, and finally have held in partnership with other noble families many other places in Astigiano, in Alessandria, in Monferrato, in Langhe, in Savoia etc. A large number of illustrious people came out of this family, amongst them castillians, ambassadors, governors, leutenant generals, great riders, state counsillors, knights of SS. Annunziata etc.
Place called Caucci in Greece. Also the word ca'uci or ca'uciu, in the Sicilian dialect means "stroke given with the foot".Variants of the surname Cauchi include Cauchy, Caucci, Cauzzi and Cavuzzi. The ancestral seat of Cauzzi and Cavuzzi was located in Cremona, Italy.
From the archives of Santo Spirito Hospital,Rabat.
In 1554 the wife of Deunisi Cauchi was a wet nurse, (suckling orphan babies) for a fee.
In 1573 the wife of Geronimo Cauchi of Rabat , was a wet nurse who suckled a girl called Joanna who was later adopted by Magnificus Antonius Inguanes and his wife Donna Horsilia by a deed in 1578.
From the book The Jews of Malta in the late Middle Ages by Godfrey Wettinger:
Cauchis documented in notarial deeds were: Benedictus Cauki (farmer), 1479,1487,1482, a blacksmith called Franciscus Cauky, 1498-1499 and Marcum Cauki, servant, 1488.
Regards Albert Cauchi
Archaelogical finds on the western coast of Sicily at a place called Caucana ( possible origin of Cauchi surname).Caucana was a large harbour town near the Syracusan colony of Camarina, 34 km S.W. of Ragusa. Camarina was founded c. 598 B.C., which suffered alternate sack and repopulation by Gela, Syracuse and Cartage, until it was finally destroyed by the Romans in 258 B.C.
Caucana was mentioned by Procopius who describes the Bysantine General Bellisarius as having in 533 A.D. touched at Malta and Gozo while his expeditionary force was sailing from Caucana in Sicily to North Africa to overthrow the Vandal kingdom.
According to Prof. Wettinger's latest book 'Place names of the Maltese Islands ca.1300-1800', a number of Madieval Maltese surnames seem to have had Byzantine Greek origins: Cachia, Cachi and Cuchi.
