Peter Ciantar of unknown town of Malta went to Gozo during the
repopulation of 1565-80
The Maltese surname Ciantar belongs to a famous noble family who were originally a branch of the famous imperial house of Paleoglogo. The surname is local in origin, being one of those surname derived from the place where a man once lived or held land in this instance the surname would be derived from Gibel Ciantar of Malta where this family would have originated. In medieval times in his region, the Ciantar family were large feudal lords, although they also held jurisdiction over other, smaller territories. The original branch of this family died out in the sixteenth century. One Neygo Ciantar, who was a noble judge in 1455. was a descendant of this original family branch. The title of first Count of Ciantar-Paleoglogo was granted to Ignazio Francisco Wizzini-Paleologo (1674-1744) in 1741 by Pope Clement XI. He was married to Generosa Vell-Abela and their daughter, Maria Ceodora (second Countess). married Count Gio'Antonio Ciantar in 1717. Their son, Glorgio Serafino Ciantar-Paleoglogo, became the third Count and married Elena Moneta-Vella in 1756. Their son, Giovanni Battista (1777-1856), became the fourth Count. Sir Giorgio Serfino-Paleoglogo (1818-87), who was the fifth Count, became the first President of the Committee of Privileges of the Maltese Nobility (1882-87). Giuseppe Ciantar-Paleoglogo was the sixth Count, although he died unmarried and passed the title to Giovanni Chapelle-Paleoglogo (1835-1901) who married Emilia Casaldi in 1866. Their son, Giovanni (1870-1937), became the eighth Count. The ninth Count, Ciantar-Paleoglogo, died on July 23, 1981 and his son, John Constantine, succeeds as tenth.

An old script found in the 1500s said that two nobile families from Spain settled in Malta in the mid 1400s. It also said that most of the land and the three palaces they owned in Spain were all lost and the power of this Nobile family of Large Feudal Lords was practically lost. Although this.... one
might still try to RE-claim his nobile title .... as Barons or Counts.

From the Barons Of San Giovanni closely related to the Ciantars
The fief of San Giovanni was first created in 1657 at Messina to Dr Vincenzo Abela LL.D by
King Philip IV of Spain, as King of Sicily with remainder to his heirs of his body each holder
having the right to nominate his or her successor.
This fief is situated in Sicily , the title becme extinct in 1746 but it was revived by
Ferdinand I, King of Two Sicilies in favour of Serafino Ciantar , 3rd Count Ciantar-Paleologo
, a kinsman of Vincenzo Abela. The re-grant which was made in Palermo in 1677 was registered
at the chancellory of the Order and for matters of precedence in Malta, the title is taken as
having been created in 1777.
Baron Frans Chappelle Paleologo's brother Roger Chappelle with his son Roger and his daughters
Lucy Parnis , Giorgina de Giorgio (mother of Chev. Roger de Giorgio KT) and Lily Pecramenos.
I have seen the site on the Barons of San Giovanni . I am afraid that the same mistake was made
as in the Book "Costumes in Malta " The picture captioned Baron Chappelle and his daughters is
wrong completely. That was the Baron's brother , Roger. The baron was married to Arrigo and his
daughters were Countess Lola Preziozi , Luiga Vadala Chapelle and Joseph Chappelle , the present
Baron's father. That picture is not the Baron , but his brother Roger Chappelle ., with his
daughters Giorgina de Giorgio, Lucy Parnis and Lily Pecromenos. They are cousins of my wife!.
Please e-mail: raphael@waldonet.net.mt .
Upon the death of the 3rd Baron , also 5th Count Ciantar-Paleologo, the Barony was bequeathing to
his nephew ‘ex sorore’ Alessandro Chapelle, brother also to the future 7th Count Ciantar-Paleologo
( see Ciantar-Paleologo).
Sir Alexandro Chapelle Kt , LL.D , succeeded as the 4th Baron, and the title passed to the present
holder from father to son…
The Present holder , Francis Chapelle, 7th Baron di San Giovanni , succeeded to the title in 1962,
and his heir is his eldest daughter, Francesca Chapelle.

Princes of Selimbria and Mystra
The title of Despot (Prince) of Mystra and the Prince di Selimbria had been held by members of the Imperial Families of Byzantine Empire as early as the 10th Century.
The title of DESPOT means Prince Sovereign or Ruler.
These particular titles were created for the younger son of Emperor Manuel II of the Byzantine Empire (r 1391-1425) (House of Paleologos) upon his renouncement to the Imperial throne (Note: The last Emperor was a younger brother of Theodore ).
His Imperial Highness, Prince Theodore Paleologos of the Byzantine Empire was created Despot of Mystria in 1407 and the Princely of Selimbria in 1443 with remainders to his descendants
Both titles were inherited from generation to generation untill the extinction of the main line in the 17th Century where it became dormant.
Each member was recognised by the Holy Roman Emperors ,the Roman Senate, and many other Sovereigns.
The titles were both dormant until the 1950's when they were called out individually by two heirs or next of kin.
The title of Despot of Mystra was revived in favour to Dr. Giovanni Chapelle Paleologo LL.D , 9th Count Ciantar-Paleaologo (See Ciantar-Paleologo) on 2nd of May 1950.
The present holder is his son John Chapelle Paleologo who is the 10th Count Ciantar-Paleologo.
The title of Prince of Selimbria was revived to Dr Joseph Borg Olivier de Puget Paleologo LL.D on 8th of April 1953.
Presently the title is held by his son Dr Albert Borg Olivier de Puget Paleologo LL.D.
Dr Albert Borg Olivier de Puget Paleologo LL.D , Prince of Mystra is a Magistrate in the Courts of the Republic of Malta and was appointed Ambassador to France from 1985 till 1991 and Ambassador to the United States of America and High Commissioner to Canada.
The Princely House of Borg Olivier de Puget Paleologo is well connected to the Counts Ciantar Paleologo and many other Noble families.
Dr Joseph Borg Olivier de Puget Paleologo LL.D's brother was the late Hon. Dr George Borg Olivier LL.D, Prime Minister of Malta (r 1950-55 and 1962-71).
The surname of Ciantar comes from the original name of 'de Cantore'

Family history has it that Luigi , 2nd son of Conte Gio'Antonio Ciantar & his wife Countess Teodora Wizini Paleologo, obtained this title from his nephew Baron Gio'Battista Ciantar Paleologo, as his brother Giorgio Serafino , Gio'Battista's father did not want to pass on the title to him.
It may be interesting to make a note that Conte Luigi was in religious 3rd Orders for many years as a chaplain in the French Langue of the Order , an honour conferred by Louis XV the of France. The family had a rich benefice for religious members, instituted by Padre Luigi Maria Wizzini Paleologo S.J. , who was the brother of Count Ignazio Francesco Wizzini Paleologo
Conte Luigi enjoyed these benefices for many years . he got married late in life and sired 2 children, Anna Milanesi Santoro & Conte Salvatore Ciantar Paleologo.
Who may be the heir is like a detective story - a Ciantar Preziozi - a Debono Preziozi - a Pulis or a Nicosia Turnbull !!!!!
incidentally the Debonos , children of teresa Ciantar Preziozi & Salvatore Debono called themselves Debono Preziozi . perhaps you could amend their name from Debono to DEBONO PREZIOZI.
The old Debono Preziozi sisters . But they are not sure if they were the children of Teresa Ciantar Preziozi and her husband Salvatore Debono , or if they were the children of the 2nd Salvatore Debono (Preziozi) their son. They died in the early 1960's !!!!!! If they were Teresa's children, they would have been quite old then. I know that there are some antique plates that belonged to these sisters
