We believe it came from Spain. Wine merchants emigrated and started the business in Malta, how far back we do not know , but are very interested to find out any info. I can go back to mid 1800 with names of some of my relatives but no furthur back.

While it is possible that the surname Coleiro is spanish, it is more probable that the surname, Coleiro, is Portugese in origin. The ending "..eiro" is a common dimnutive and surname ending in Portugese (e.g. "Ribeiro".
