Coat of Arms Submitted by Geoff Sultana
The coat of arm of Cordina has a blue backrground and three flowers with a
number of leaves. The colours of the flowers may vary from one image of the
coat of arm and another. Although the flowers in this coat of arm are red
they also might be red AND yellow. In reality the blue colour is a bit
lighter.

The surname Cordina is said to have been
made by a rich man of Spanish origins to
imitate some nobile surname after migrating to Malta were a small part of this family settled. Records have been
set about problems with the Barons Xavier-Gonzaga and this rich family.
Somehow most of the land and houses owned by Cordina were soon owned by the
Barons Xavier-Gonzaga. It is thought that to win their statement the Barons
gave a large sum of money to buy the Court.

The surname Cordina is of occupational origin. Deriving from the trade or profession pursued by the original bearer. In this instance, the surname Cordina actually finds its origin in the Italian word "CORDINA" which signifies "thin rope". It is not clear what was the exact trade or profession held by the originalbearer. The name, obviously applied as a metonym, may have referred to one who was a "twine, rope, cordor string maker".
Indeed,P.H Reaney, an authorityon the development of surnames, refers to the "string maker"as a "maker of strings for bows".There is a reference, perhaps the first using this brade as a surname,to one "Walker Stringere" ( from "stringer" meaning "string maker") who was recorded in England in 1194. The axact English equivalent of Cordina is the name String and indeed there is a reference in 1177 when we find a record of "William and Henry String". The beautiful island of Malta has a strong Italian influence, although the language in vacabulary is similar to Syrian and Arabic, its alphabet and grammatical structure are derived from Latin. Malta was a colony of the Roman Empire and during its division in 395AD the island was awarded to the Eastern Roman Empire. The Maltese islands were occupied by Arabs in 870 and in 1090, a Norman army conquered the Maltese Arabs and later Malta was made a feudal fief of the kingdom of Sicily. In 1530 the Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empi!
re granted Malta to the Knights of St.John of Jerusalem, called the Hospitalers, who ruled the islands untill the ninteenth century.
Cordina is the surname of a noble Maltese family. The coat of arms of this family is listed in the "Genealogy and Heralory of the Noble families of Malta.
