He was born
in Valletta on 27th January, 1872. He took his vows as a Carmelitan
friar on 28th August, 1891 and he said Mass for the first time in 1898.
Anastasju studied in Malta and took a doctorate in Philosophy from the
Gregorian University in Rome. In 1902, he became a Professor of
Philosophy. Having returned to Malta, Anastasju was chosen as a member
of the General Council at the University where he presided over the
Faculty of Science and was also an examiner of students of Italian
language and literature for many years. He was elected as the head of
the Carmelitan Order in Malta twice. Anastasju was the Senator
representing university graduates under the first two legislatures (1921
and 1932) of the Maltese government too. In 1921, he was also the
director of the first study club founded to promote the education of
Maltese workers. This Carmelitan friar is also famous for his poetry and
for his involvement in politics. Anastasju was a supporter of the
Nationalist party which, during the 1930s, was in favour of a strong
alliance between Malta and Fascist Italy. During the Second World War,
he was kept under surveillance by the British Government because of his
political beliefs. Anastasju died in 1962.
