CUTAJAR Written as such by the sicilian notaries of the 14th and 15th centuries.
They transcribed semitic maltese phonemes the way they sounded to their ears and using the latin alphabet they had , thus distorting most maltese surnames. Perhaps Cutajar suffered less under their pen. The modern maltese orthoraphy would read KTAJJAR. The semitic root is K-Th-R . ( Th in malteses has been assmilated into T ) and it means numerous. Ktajjar is the diminutive of KETIR just as "Qsajjar" is the diminutive of "Qasir".

Ktajjar therefore means " slightly numerous" This is testimony to the antiquity and "malteseness" of this surname. The Cutajars of this world originated when the maltese numbered a few thousands.
