Crest Submitted by Manuel Psaila
The Maltese Desira's date
back to at least the year 1585, where a Greek Professional Mariner by the
name of George de Sira, arrived from the Greek island of Syros(Sira or
Syra) settled in Birgu and worked for the Knights of St. John and was 2nd
in command of a trireme called the "St. John". Of substance, there was also
a Greek Professional Mariner, Leonardo de Sira, who took part in the great
siege of Malta in the year of 1565 and served with the commander of the
fleet, no other than Romegas himself. Information regarding Leonardo de
Sira can be found in Professor Fiorini's book titled "Mdina", Vol.II, page
479-481.
