JOSEPH EDWARD DOUBLET Member, Supreme Council Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem

Joseph Edward Doublet was born February 13, 1901 in Msida, -Malta; son of Anthony Jean Ovide Doublet, A. & C.E., direct descendant of the well known Malta historical figure Pierre Jean Louis Ovide Doublet (1749-1824). Secretary to the Grand Masters of the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta.
Education: Lyceum of the Royal University of Malta; Chicago Law and Purdue University.
Served as Transportation officer with the British Expeditionary Forces in World War 1. Traffic Examiner, Malta Railway; Foreign Exchange Specialist with the Irving Trust Co. of New York and for 45 years Transportation Official with the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Organizations: The Eagles; Traffic Club of America; National Transportation Club; The Malta Society of New York; Maltese Union Club; Founder and President of the Maltese Benevolent Society; Founder and President of the Malta War Relief Fund; The Malta Art and Industry Exhibitions; Founder of the Maltese Association of North America, President of the New York Chapter; Editor and publisher of the "Maltese Journal" in New York from 1935 to 1947; President of the Committee for Maltese Unity, Inc., a Charitable Organization, since 1965; Grand Almoner of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta.
While representing Malta and the Maltese Community in many major events he received the cooperation and praise of the late Cardinal Hayes, Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop George J. Caruana, Papal Nuncio of the Antilles, Archbishop Fulton Sheen, Governor Alfred E. Smith, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, King George VI, King Peter 11, Senators A. Harry Moore, Robert Wagner, W. Fulbright, Foster Stearns; Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, General John Pershing, Ambassador William O'Dwyer, Ambassador Bonnet of France, Governor Thomas E. Dewey, Cardinals Cushing and Mclntyre, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Secretary of the Army Frank Pace.
On August 10, 1960 was decorated with the Cross of Honor and Merit of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta, by Lt. Grand Master Graf Zeppellin for his vast contribution and noble works to help Malta and the Maltese people since 1920. In June of 1965 he was elected Vice President of the Supreme Council and on June 24, 1965 appointed Ambassador at Large by H. M. Peter 11, Grand Master of the Order. H.M. also honored him with the Diploma of Commander of Justice and Bailiff Grand Cross of the Order on May 13, 1967. At the Military Ball of the Royal Club held at the Biltmore Hotel, New York City, King Peter 11 of Yugoslavia decorated him with the Commemorative War Cross 1941-45 of the Royal Yugoslav Army, for his general humanitarian services during World War 11. The King described him as an indispensable member of the Sovereign Supreme Council of the Knights of Malta. Since his retirement from work he has been a volunteer entertainer for the poor, sick, Orphanages, mentally and physically retarded, Nursing Homes, Hospitals, Schools and Senior Citizens of Suffolk County on Long Island.

Born in Orleans, France on August 15, 1749, Pierre-Jean-Louis Ovide Doublet, played an important part in the Capitulation of Malta in 1798.
