The surname Ellul was written Hellul up to a century or two ago, and I once read that way back in the 15th century a member of the government, in those days called the UNIVERSITA, was a certain Hellul.

This surname may have originated from Spanish Jews who were expelled from Spain and found their way to Malta. This surname is also found in France still spelled with an H(ellul). For sure it is of semitic origin and it refers to a calndric period which we today call September or October.

Its origin in Malta may also predate the Spanish Jews' diaspora since Malta had been goverened by Spanish regimes since the end of the aArab domination and the re-Cristianisation of the Maltese archipelago.

One must also note that the semitic origin of the Maltese language is not a result of the Arab domination, which I'm sure left its mark, but to older times most probably to the Punic time when Malta was colonised by the phoenicians who are todays' Lebanese.

Hence the surname ellul can even be a very old Maltese surname similar to the surnames Bugeja, Buhagiar, Butigieg etc. The prefix BU meaning, in Semitic, THE FATHER OF. In Hebrew it is ABBA and in Arabic it is ABU.

If one were to carry out a search on the net for the word HELLUL one will get many Jewish sites refering to this word.

Also the surname HELLUL appear to be extant in France were even a certain famous person Hellul left philosophical writings (ca 1950) about the future of Humanity. (His pessimistic predictions turned out to be false, thank God)
