Galdes and Galdies are variations of the same name. I have been told that the name, though familiar in Malta, is not common. Apparently the name is associated with a village called Qormi, whose patron saint is Saint George. Hence many Galdes families have a son named George.
The Galdes name may be of Portuguese origin, and probably came to Malta in the 17th Century via some seafaring immigrant. But this is mostly speculation.
