Angelo Ghigo (1898-1984)
Angelo Ghigo was the first Maltese meteorologist. He was
born at Mqabba in 1898 and died in Birkirkara in 1984. Twenty seven
priests concelebrated in his funeral Mass. For seventy years he taught
English, Geography and History at the Archbishop's Seminary and St
Aloysius College. Distinguished pupils included Sir Anthony Mamo, Mons
Xuereb the Vigarius Emeritus and Mons Victor Grech of Caritas. His main
job was in the RAF meteorological office. Other jobs included that of
religious correspondent with the "Times of Malta" and organist at the
Capuchins' Friary in Floriana. He published a book of poems in Maltese
entitled "Il-Linfa l-Qadima u poeziji ohra". For a time he was president
of an Mqabba band club.
Mons. Angelo Ghigo was older than his cousin he was parish priest of
Zurrieq and Archpriest of Floriana.
