Regarding the Maltese surname Ghigo. This is the surname of my mother's
family. My grandfather was from Mqabba and even nowadays there is a
concentration of Ghigos in this town. My grandfather used to say that a
soldier from Florence namd Ghigo came to Malta with Napoleon in 1798.
This soldier married a Maltese girl and settled in Mqabba. A curious
note is that in the Maltese dialect spoken in this town. the word for
plate is "sjett" from the French "assiette" and not "platt".
