Some claim that the origin of the surname comes from obscure French Saint Mammes, later changed to Mamon, then to Mamo in
Malta, after emigration.
An Israeli student
pointed out that "Mamo" could either be derived from Mammon (meaning wealth
in Jewish and which gave the name "mammona" to the devil) or else from
"Maimon", a Jewish surname (there is a famous Jewish philosopher Moses
Maimonides).
In Malta, this name dates back to the 16th century, when Simone Mamo appeared
on "The list of Non-Titled Maltese families"

Mamo Tower,
located at St Thomas' Bay, Malta. Reference to this tower is made in Stephen
C. Spiteri's book "The Knights' Fortifications" (1989) pages 172-173.
