The English Surname Marshall is of occupational origin, deriving from the name of the profession or trade once persued by the original bearer. In this instance, the name can be traced to the old English word 'marshal' which denoted a blacksmith. In medieval England the blacksmith was an important occupation;he was employed by the nobility to look after the horses. The marshal usually had more jobs than merely shoeing the horses;it was also his responsability to groom them.In effect he was a 'horse doctor'.During the middle ages it was common practice to identify a person with the type of work he did and to refer to him in this manner. Thus the smith employed in the castle became known as the 'marshal' and this surname he subsequently adopted as his family name. This surname did not derive from the military title as that is a relatively modern term. The family name originated in the thirteenth century as the early records indicate. The first recorded instances of the name occur in the 'hundred rolls',a document drawn in London in 1273.
