The Montanaro family can be traced back to the City of Verona where they were known as MONTANARO DEI MONTANARI. It was during the 14th century that they were to become known as MONTANARO. To this very day there stands a Palazzo Montanaro in Piazza Montanaro in Verona.
The family members were by and large leaders and Condottieri in the Isercito dei Grandi della Scala, holding high military rankings.
The Maltese roots of the family can be traced from the records of the Ordine Gerosolmitano, which recounts the following:
When the Knights rebelled against the Grand Master de LaCassiere and had him imprisoned at Fort St Angelo. A certain Montanaro who was Captain "Della Verga" offered to rescue de LaCassiere with a force of over 2000 soldiers, however the old Grand Master was against any spilling of blood and prefered to await the decision of his release from His Holiness the Pope in Rome. This incident took place in the year 1561. (from "the Fortifications of Malta & Fort St Angelo" in "The Armed Forces of Malta Journal" of 17th January 1974 - pg 79).
Attilio Montanaro became a Knight in 1607 in the Priorato di Venezia della Lingua di Italia (ca. 4609). He came to Malta in 1608. The story is told of his friend and partner, Sir Giacomo Battista Calderari who, on coming out of St Johns Church in Valletta had an argument with another knight, Giovanni Giacomo Linutoli which ended up in a duel right there on the stairs in front of the doors of the church during which Calderari was fataly wounded. Montanaro, as partner of Calderari, in turn slew Linutoli. This resulted in his imprisonment for one year of hard labour in Malta following which he was devested of his religious title and expelled from the Island. He was taken in by the family Bentivoglio in Via Forni(at the time Strada San Giovanbattista) until 1613 when, through the direct intervention of His Holiness the Pope, Grand Master de Wignacourt re-Knighted him.
(from the National Library, Valetta - "Liber Conciliorini@ Gran Maestro A de Wignacourt - Vol. 104. Pg 125.)
The above information was researched and documented by Dr Edgar G Montanaro.
