Born in 1808 in Senglea, Malta was Louis,(Lewis), Scicluna, whose spelling
was later changed to Shickluna.
Louis emigrated from Malta at 16, worked aboard the ship he was travelling
on, (some by some accounts, to offset stowing away), (as he was from a
shipbuilding heritage), landed in New York as a shipwright, eventually
settled in St. Catharines, Ontario were he established a major shipbuilding
enterprise.
Louis acheived many accomplishments and accolades for his ingenuity.
Suffering from severe Rheumatoid Arthritis as well as failing health, he
returned to Malta in 1871 to visit his lineage once more and by some
accounts, to leave a dowry to subsequent generations.
He passed away in St. Catharines in 1880.
His son Joseph continued in his footsteps.
I believe St. Catharines declared the remains of his former shipyard an
Historical Site.
I've not done Mr. Scicluna justice by skimming through such a productive and
influencial life. Please look into this extraordinary Maltese innovator and
perhaps you will agree.
