- Erin Serracino-Inglott - (was born on October 16, 1904. He studied in
college and university. member of Academy of Malta till 1943. He
wrote plays, novels which were published. He directed comedy plays of
Dante's . He also did documentaries. Erin also introduced romances in
French by Gaston Leroux. Erin Serracino-Inglott made a name for
himself by publishing a dictionary one in English The Triliterality of
Quadriliterals in Semitic Maltese. Il-Miklem Malti was his biggest
accomplishment.)
- Franco Serracino Inglott -, director general of special projects at the ministry of agriculture and fisheries, has died after a long illness. He was 53.
Mr Serracino Inglott started his career as an agriculture economist at the department of agriculture and fisheries in 1970, becoming a principal officer in 1978 and director of agriculture in 1993.
He was appointed director general, agriculture in 2000 and received Gieh ir-Repubblika last year.
Former agriculture officer Joe Borg said when contacted that Mr Serracino Inglott was "a gentleman who was extremely calm and never let emotions get the better of him especially in difficult moments".
"He was a most humane person, both with colleagues and subordinates. He made it a point to encourage voluntary organisations to take part in agricultural events and was a great promoter of the department's extension services.
"He believed that the department should go to the growers and herdsmen and not the other way round," Mr Borg said.
Mr Serracino Inglott had come up with the idea of renting out the old pottery house at Buskett to a ceramist on condition that the ceramist would donate works to the nation every year. One such work may be viewed at Buskett and another two at San Anton Gardens.
One of the special projects close to his heart was the Chinese Garden of Serenity in Santa Lucija, Mr Borg said.
Mr Serracino Inglott read economics at the University of Malta and agricultural economy at the University of Leeds. He lectured applied economics at tal-Qroqq.
He was a council member of the Malta Council for Science and Technology, a board member of Gozo Agricultural Products, Medigrain, Comino Pig Development Co. and CIHEAM, the Institute for Advanced Agricultural Studies which has branches in Bari, Saragosa, Crete and Montpellier.
He served on various government boards and attended several conferences of the Food and Agriculture Organisation. He took part in agricultural surveys of the Maltese islands by FAO in 1972, 1987 and 1997.
He represented Santa Lucija on the Bible Commission.
Opposition agriculture spokesman Noel Farrugia paid tribute to Mr Serracino Inglott in parliament, saying he had always been loyal and faithful to his duties and had served the civil service to the best of his abilities.
He is survived by his wife Carmen née Degiorgio, his son Stephen and daughter Nicolette.
