Joseph Nicholas Zammit (1771 - 1823)
One of Malta's leading personages in the first two decades of British Rule
was Sir Joseph Nicholas Zammit. Born in 1771, he began his career with the
British Administartion as Pro-Secretary to the Civil Commissioners Ball
and Oakes and to Governor Sir Thomas Maitland.
In 1814, Maitland carried out a reform of the Law Courts and Dr. Zammit
was appointed as one of the Judges of the Superior Courts. Four years later
the British Government instituted the Order of St Michael and St George.
Judge Zammit was nominated as one of the first members of the new Order
and the accolade of Knight Commander was conferred on him at the Palace,
Valletta, on 16 December 1818.
Judge Zammit was highly esteemed by Sir Thomas Maitland who also nominated
him as one of the members of the Supreme Council of Justice, and in 1820,
Vice President of the Court of Appeal. In January 1822, Judge Zammit was
chosen as one of the two commissioners in all matters relating to bunkruptcy,
and in the same year he went to England with the Governor to discuss reforms
in the administration of Justice with the British Authorities. In January
1823, Maitland nominated Judge Zammit as a member of the Commission, which
was to inquire into the state of the University. He died at his residence
in Valletta on 7 September 1823, and his remains were transported to the
Co-Cathedral of St. John.
At the time of his demise, Maitland was away from Malta, but after his return
in November 1823, he gave instructions that a monument to his memory was
to be erected at public expense.
